What does it really mean to be a member of a community?
Is membership about paying dues, participating in activities, feeling a sense of belonging, contributing time and energy, accessing services, or some combination of all of these?
Join us on Wednesday, October 14 at 11:00-12:30 CET for an interactive virtual session for Jewish community professionals to explore membership through a fresh lens.
Rather than focusing on redesigning membership structures, we will engage in a thought exercise that examines how membership works in different aspects of our lives. Together, we will look at models such as subscriptions, freemiums, loyalty programs, and digital communities, and consider what they can teach us about Jewish communal life.
WE WILL EXPLORE
- What membership means in different contexts and communities.
- How membership models shape engagement, participation, and belonging.
- What organizations can reasonably expect from members.
- What members should be able to expect from organizations.
- How membership structures can reflect and support organizational goals.
This session offers an opportunity to exchange ideas, challenge assumptions, and learn from colleagues across Europe.
Priority will be given to Jewish community professionals living and working in Europe.
MIKE MENDOZA
Mike Mendoza is Director of Junction, JDC Europe’s young adult program, which supports and enriches the lives of Jewish young adults aged 18-35 across Europe in meaningful and relevant ways. He is also a member of the JDC Europe Community Development team, serving as liaison to Jewish communities in Scandinavia and Ireland.
With more than 14 years of experience as a Jewish communal professional, Mike has worked extensively in youth engagement, informal education, and community development. Prior to joining JDC, he served as Head of Family Programs for one of Europe’s largest progressive synagogues. He is passionate about making Jewish life, spirituality, heritage, and ritual accessible to all.
Mike holds a B.A. in Human Geography and has a particular interest in how people connect with place, culture, and community. Outside of work, he is an enthusiastic fan of Taylor Swift, science fiction, and Marvel comics.
